An {un} Forgetable night.

We wanted to take in the sunshine on Labor Day weekend. So decided to charge north for the Schooner Festival in Gloucester, MA. The boys did a few crafty "seashore" activities, we toured The Peacemaker ship and had some time to kill before the lighted boat parade and fireworks. We took a drive further north and hit the world renowned Farnham's (o.k. maybe not world renowned...known throughout New England & maybe to some seafood lovers across the nation) and grabbed some fried clams. We also happened to drive past the most picturesque little airport just off the coast. No pavement there, just a perfectly green grass runway. An airplane was taxing and we got to watch it take off. It was a magical moment for the boys, and I have to admit I thought it was wonderful too. We made to back to Gloucester and grabbed a bite to eat (really good chicken panini...yummy). Later, the boys played on the beach, made some friends, and talked us into buying them some light sabers (because these ones actually light up, and every boy needs at least 2 light sabers, one for each hand, and...we are suckers). They had a wonderful time dueling on the beach. We watched the boat parade and packed up and headed home.

{Intentionally omitted is the part where my protective hubby gets in a verbal confrontation, with a gentleman who would not refrain from purposely puffing huge clouds of cigarette smoke in my baby's face. He's a good hubby.}

And that's when the real memorable stuff begins. We were about 15 minutes into our 45 minute drive home and our car starts flipping out. Bottom line, it stops. In the middle of the freeway. In the dark. Nice. Fortunately, we were able to use the last of the battery left in Spencer's phone (of course I left mine at home) to call a tow truck. Tow trucks are not made for a family of 6. However, what other choice did we have but to double, no triple up into the front cab of the tow truck where we were taken to the nearest Walgreen's and dropped off. Our fantastically wonderful life-saving friend, Josh, came and picked up our pathetic little bunch at 11:00 p.m. We made it home. The car is good to go now. Best of all the boys thought it was so much fun to ride in a town truck.

  • Thanks to the good people at Walgreen's, who took us in for over an hour, let us use their personal cell phones, provided us with extra seating and made sure we made it out to the "rescue" car o.k.

It was a truly unforgettable night, crazily, in a good way.
